The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and its reporters were held in contempt of court for not revealing the identities of confidential news sources about the Centennial Olympic Park bombing and Richard Jewell's involvement. Jewell filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper, and the main issue was whether Jewell is a public or private figure. The court established a test to determine if someone is a limited-purpose public figure, and found that Jewell was an involuntary limited-purpose public figure since he played a significant role in the Olympic Park safety controversy. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution appealed the trial court's refusal to grant its motion for summary judgment in the defamation lawsuit, but Jewell filed a motion to dismiss the appeal.
