September 19, what began as a routine morning for air-defense radar operators in Estonia quickly escalated into a high-alert situation. Radar screens detected three fast-moving contacts approaching from the east — later identified as Russian MiG-31 interceptor aircraft.

The jets altered course toward the Baltic region and approached Estonian airspace in the vicinity of Vaindloo Island, a strategically sensitive area near the maritime boundary. During the incident, the aircraft were reported to be flying without active transponders, and no radio communication was established with Estonian air-traffic control.

From the perspective of regional air-defense networks, the aircraft’s movement had not gone unnoticed. NATO radar systems were already tracking the formation as it departed a Russian airbase in the western military district, allowing allied command centers to monitor the situation in real time.

As the jets briefly entered airspace monitored by NATO at an altitude of approximately 30,000 feet, the situation was treated as a potential airspace violation and immediately escalated through alliance command channels. What followed was a coordinated response designed to assert sovereignty, maintain air safety, and signal that such actions would not go unanswered by NATO.
