Castro Urdiales is a small resort and fishing harbor situated eight miles west of the major port of Bilbao on the coast of NorthWest Spain. Originally a 1st century AD Roman colony established to mine the iron ore deposits in the surrounding hills, it became an important port in the Middle Ages for the export of goods to northern Europe, receiving its municipal charter in 1163.

Although destroyed by French forces during the Peninsular War, the town was rebuilt and upgrades, including arcaded squares and a 13th-century medieval church and castle.

A tour between the Middle Ages and modernity
Castro Urdiales is a seaport and tourist resort, situated in the northern part of Spain, and more precisely – on the Bay of Biscay, located in the autonomous community of Cantabria.
The town provides a pleasurable balance between modern amenities and historical landmarks, cultural experiences and leisure activities, tourist accommodations, and a peaceful environment.
Sightseeing around Castro Urdiales

The Castle of Santa Ana – an outstanding military-architectural landmark near the shore, furtherly provided with a modern-time lighthouse;
The Puente Medieval – a single-arch bridge from the Middle ages that can be still walked across today.

Leisure in Castro Urdiales

Exploring the caves around town, which are not only of radiant nature but also host several rock carvings and paintings from as far back as the Upper Paleolithic. They include Cave of El Cuco, Cave Aurelia, Cave of La Lastrilla, Cave Grande or de Los Corrales, and more.

Like many harbors along this coast, fishing was once a significant source of income. Fishing is in decline at the moment and tourism become more and more popular.
