A severe winter storm driven by the southward shift of the polar vortex brought extreme cold, heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain across nearly 17 US states in January 2026, impacting about 157 million people. The harsh conditions strained energy supplies and led to at least seven deaths, while the National Weather Service issued warnings of widespread and prolonged travel disruptions.
