STORYLINE:
As fighting continues around the southern Taliban stronghold of Kandahar, a spokesman for an international aid agency has expressed concern over the fate of Afghan refugees who are still in the vicinity of the city.
American troops have been on the ground in Afghanistan for weeks to help forces fighting the Taliban militia, giving them weapons, food and other supplies.
But aid agencies are concerned about civilians trapped by the fighting who are also in dire need of food and supplies.
Thousands of Afghan refugees have already travelled to camps on the border with Pakistan.
The Roghani camp, near Chaman, has a population of 16,000.
Hamid Karzai's recent appointment as head of a provisional government in Afghanistan will secure billions in aid for the war-ravaged country.
Meanwhile, the U-N-C-H-R suspended its activities in Pakistan's tribal areas on Tuesday, following an armed attack on two U-N vehicles in the Shabqadar area, 30 kilometres (18 miles) north of Peshawar.
