Welcome to this epic 3-hour DIY build part 2 of 4 (part one 78min not included) . In part one we did the design and the layout. Check out part 1: • 40106 based oscillator part 1 Design and L...
In this 3 part, hour long video series we take a deep dive into building a 40106-based oscillator from start to finish! In this comprehensive, step-by-step video, we'll guide you through the entire process of building a robust and versatile oscillator module, perfect for your modular synth setup or any other electronics project. Whether you're a seasoned electronics hobbyist or a total beginner, this video is packed with valuable information and practical tips to help you along the way. Check part 1 for design and layout.
We dive straight into the build! We’ll show you every step of the process, starting with gathering all the necessary components—resistors, capacitors, an op-amp and, of course, the CD40106 IC itself. We’ll show some of the tools you’ll need, from soldering irons to multimeters, ensuring you’re fully prepared to tackle this project.
Next, we’ll move on to looking at the circuit on a paper, providing a detailed view of each connection. You'll see exactly where each wire goes, how to connect the components, and tips for keeping your build clean and organized. We’ll explain the role of each part in the circuit and how it contributes to the overall functionality of the oscillator. You’ll also learn about debugging techniques to ensure your circuit works as expected from the get-go.
Once we’ve failed drawing the circuit on the paper, it’s time to transfer it onto a stripboard where we hopefully will fail again so that the double negative turns positive;) :) ! We’ll guide you through the process of making solder bridges, messing up the stripboard layout, make mistakes in transferring the schematic, soldering components, and testing the final product. We’ll cover important techniques like short circuiting your power supply in several different ways in order to make you ready to try it yourself, and to ensure your oscillator operates like an unpredictable grumpy cat..
By the end of this marathon build session, you might have a partly functional 40106-based oscillator, at best, if you are as good as us, but still if you are a masochistic noise artist it can be ready to integrate into your modular synth or any other project. This video is all about hands-on learning by failing, failing again and failing better—understanding by making mistakes, failing and learning to live with the failures.
So, grab your tools, set up your workspace, and let's build something amazing together. Happy building!
