Conditions for Voluntary Well Ignition: Oil and Gas Drilling
The decision to ignite the well voluntarily is based on the following conditions:
✔ Condition 1: If uncontrollable gas flow creates a 30 ppm H2S concentration at the RER — ignite immediately.
✔ Condition 2: If the flow presents a 100 ppm H2S concentration around the well perimeter or poses danger to nearby inhabited areas — ignite immediately.
✔ Condition 3: Any other condition that poses immediate threat will be handled by higher management or authorized personnel if time allows.
👉 If communication with higher management is not possible, the D&WO Liaison-man, Well Control Team Leader, Superintendent, or Manager has the authority to ignite the well.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
During the ignition procedure, the operator must wear:
✅ Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
✅ Fire-resistant gear.
✅ Full-body protective equipment.
Ignition Procedure Using Flare Gun:
The operator must position themselves 300 to 400 feet away from the ignition point, ensuring the wind is at their back.
Maintain a clear escape route before firing the flare gun.
Aim the flare gun as per the following scenarios:
If fluid is rising, aim at the vapors above the fluid column.
If no fluid column, aim at the rotary table.
If gas and fluid are escaping from the cellar, aim at the cellar area.
If the flame does not ignite, move closer in 20 feet increments until ignition occurs.
Misfire Procedure:
In case of misfire:
✅ Re-cock the hammer and pull the trigger again (repeat four times).
✅ If the flare gun still does not fire, keep it pointed down range.
✅ Open the breech, drop the cartridge in a bucket of water, and seal it with a lid.
Other Areas to Ignite:
Shale Shaker Area: If hydrocarbon vapors reach the shale shaker, ensure ignition.
Flare Pits: If the flare lines are open, ignite the flare pits using the flare gun.
Controlled Well Ignition:
If a controlled well control situation arises where the gut line is opened to flare and the remote ignition system fails — the flare gun will be used for ignition.
✅ This procedure is crucial for ensuring safety in high-risk well situations. Always follow proper guidelines, secure personnel, and prioritize well control measures to prevent major hazards.
