▹ Let freshly laid wood acclimatise for several days and ensure moisture content is below 15%
▹ Use 120 grit sandpaper to remove coating; for extra smoothness you can add a final sand with 240 grit, then remove all sanding dust before oiling
▹ Wipe surface with methylated spirits to ensure the surface is clean before applying
▹ Apply sparingly in the direction of the grain – tight-grain hardwoods need less product
▹ If a second coat is needed, lightly de-nib between coats and wipe away any excess that doesn’t soak in
▹ Always do a small test patch and check colour / compatibility with any fillers or dyes first
