Dr. John Radzilowski: The Dead Hand of the Past – Polish-Russian Relations at the Turn of the 21st Century – May 6, 2002
This video was made in 2002 at the Miller Center for Public Affairs at the University of Virginia as part of the Miller Center Forum, which is a series that invites speakers for public lectures on a range of topics. The host was Professor Kenneth Thompson (1921-2013) who at the time was director emeritus of the Miller Center. He had been director of the center from 1978-1998. Dr. Thompson was the author of numerous books on international relations and one of the leading exponents of the realist school of foreign policy. Due to UVA's association with Thomas Jefferson, the Miller Center focuses on research on presidential history and foreign policy. At the time, the Miller Center also hosted the Kosciuszko Chair in Polish Studies, an effort supported by Professor Thompson and Lady Blanka Rosenstiel. (Later, this Chair moved to the Institute for World Politics in Washington, D.C.) The talk given in this video was part of a larger series sponsored by the Kosciuszko Chair on Poland's transition since 1989 which later appeared as a book under the title Poland's Transition: A Work in Progress(Routledge, 2006), which was co-edited by Dr. Radzilowski (who is featured in this video) with Drs. Marek Jan Chodakiewicz and Dariusz Tolczyk. Dr. Radzilowski was at the time associate director of the Center for Nations in Transition (CNT) at Hubert H. Humphrey Center for Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. CNT, led by director Prof. Zbigniew Bochniarz created and implemented programs, to assist universities, NGOs, and local government in Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, and Bulgaria.
