The Oort cloud is a vast, spherical cloud of icy bodies that surrounds our solar system far beyond the Kuiper Belt. It's thought to extend from about 2,000 to at least 50000 (AU) from the Sun
This distant reservoir is believed to contain trillions of icy objects, remnants from the early solar system's formation, scattered outwards by the gravity of the giant planets. Although objects in the Oort cloud are far too faint to be seen there are strong reasons for believing that it must exist.
It is generally accepted that the Oort cloud is the source of most long-period comets, whose orbits are disturbed by passing stars or the galactic tide, sending them towards the inner solar system.
