Once the most glamorous beach in Cyprus, Varosha’s Palm Beach in Famagusta drew the world’s elite — Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Brigitte Bardot among them. Today, the same turquoise waters wash against a silent ghost town, frozen since 1974.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, this coast was Cyprus’s top luxury resort — its modern hotels and lively promenades symbolized a new Mediterranean Riviera. But in July 1974, following a political coup, the Turkish army invaded; within 24 hours residents were forced to flee, leaving everything behind.
The quarter was sealed off, its hotels left to rust in the sun. UN Resolution 550 (1984) forbade any resettlement — preserving Varosha as a haunting relic of the divided island.
Today, Arkin Palm Beach Hotel stands at the border between the living coast and the forbidden zone. Beyond the fence, façades of Grecian, Golden Sands and King George remain — lifeless but beautiful in the shimmering light.
