The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed 200 - 300 meter underground triangular infrastructure (which will house 6 laser interferometers) to host a third-generation, gravitational-wave observatory.
The Einstein Telescope will achieve a greatly improved sensitivity by the 10 km arm length and implementing cryogenic systems to cool some of the main optics to 10 – 20 Kelvin, and using new quantum technologies to reduce the fluctuations of the light, and a set of infrastructural and active noise-mitigation measures to reduce environmental perturbations.
The Einstein Telescope has many R&D challenges in the field of mirror (coatings and scaling) and the interaction between cryo-cooling and suspensions.
The Einstein Telescope consists of 141 vacuum towers with heights varying between 6 and 20 m. Total high-vacuum volume will be the largest ever realized: 120.000 m3. The Low Frequency beams with 45cm silicon mirrors (cooled 10-20K) passing underneath the High Frequency beams with fused silica mirrors of 62cm. Most of the optical elements and the largest lower-level clean room are located in the 3 corner caverns.
