Cheaper Parts for Old Tractors

Описание: Not everyone wants, or can afford or justify a new tractor. If you're trying to bring an older tractor back to life the price of replacement parts may shock you, occasionally they're not even available from the manufacturer. If you're trying to cut some corners, or find those obsolete parts, you may need the assistance of a good tractor salvage yard.

Today we're going to talk about finding good used parts (they really don't like the word "salvage") with Terri, who owns The Tractor Barn at Republic, Missouri, and has been providing used parts for most of her life. She's also Secretary of the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. The NTPDA is an organization of dealers who sell used parts, and if you're looking for someone in your area who is a member and offers them (even if you live in another country) you can go to their website: http://www.ntpda.com/ and find that information.

Terri brought out some points about the business that you should know when searching for parts. First, most salvage yard specialize in one particular brand. Terri is a Ford Tractor person, in our area there are also folks that specialize in Deere, International, White and Minneapolis-Moline, and Deutz. If you have one of those brands, that's who you'd see for used parts. Because these folks specialize, they are a wealth of information about everything related to their particular brand. Generally, if you don't know who specializes in a particular brand of parts, you can probably call any NTPA member and they'll head you in the right direction.

In the old days, salvage yards were acres and acres of old machines and if you wanted a particular part you had to bring your toolbox and remove it yourself. Today that's generally not the case. Most part are removed from the old tractors and then cataloged and stored inside in parts bins just like the new ones are.

We learned in the video that some of the older tractors are getting really hard to find parts for and that's a problem. There are also some aftermarket folks making new replacements for some of the high-demand parts and they may be CHEAP, but they may not be as good as the original part. The old rule of thumb was that salvage parts cost half as much as new, but with the off-brand, third world built cheap replacements floating around, they may be a lot higher than that in relation to them. You kinda get what you pay for with parts.

Finally, there are some big used parts conglomerates springing up, they may offer way more inventory from their multiple locations, but most don't have the expertise that the single-brand focused yards have. The operators of the latter type of yards tend to be older and have more years of experience with their brand that the multi-location yards.

Terri says a lot of the older "ma and pa" salvage yards are closing as the owners near retirement and that's sad. I've always enjoyed trips to tractor salvage yards. You just never know what you're going to see, you get a history lesson, and there's almost always good discussion about the passion that we all share...tractors.
