Thanatology
LATE CHANGES
Putrefaction; (Ultimate fate of all living creatures.)
Arrest of Putrefaction;
(Extra ordinary phenomenon)
Mummification
Adipocere formation
These delayed changes provide more certain Diagnosis of Death
And as they are progressive in nature. They also help inEstimation Period After Death.
Putrefaction
PUTREFACTION…………
This is disintegration of organic into in-organic.
It is one of the late signs of death. Putrefaction begins when Rigor Mortis virtually ceases, and it is most absolute sign of death.
“This is a process of decomposition by which the dead body is broken into its smaller components, and its conversion from organic to inorganic stage.”
Decomposition/dissolution of body tissues into
Gases
Liquids
Salts
The ultimate fate of body by conversion of Organic to Inorganic state.
It is absolute / surest sign of death
There are Two processes which are responsible to cause putrefaction,
Autolysis (Self destruction)
Bacterial Action (Micro-organisms)
AUTOLYSIS
It is the softening and liquefaction which occurs in a tissue even under sterile conditions.
It is brought about by the digestive action of enzymes released from cell’s lysosomes after death.
It can only be prevented by freezing.
It can only be prevented by freezing.
BACTERIAL ACTION
After death the bacteria which are normally inhabitating the body, soon invade the tissues, the blood which is the excellent medium for their growth.
Most of the bacteria comes from the bowel and the Claustridium welchii predominates.
And if the death is due to a bacterial disease, then putrefaction is rapid in onset and course.
MICRO-ORGANISMS
IN LIVING
Present in body in large numbers But Remain under control
JUST AFTER – DEATH
Micro-organisms are out of control & They Multiply in large numbers, Become virulent
They Enter blood vessels and Spread throughout the body
PROGRESS OF PUTREFACTION
SIGNS OF PUTREFACTION
1. Color changes
2. Production of gases
3. Pressure effects of gases
4. Appearance of maggots
5. Other sequelae or Manifestations

This Process Can be Subdivided Into Different Stages,
Which are Three Stages,
1. Stage 1
2. Stage 2
3. Stage 3
