Welcome to the final day of my musical Advent Calendar 2024, this year's Makam Edition!
I couldn't complete this Advent Calendar without the king of the makams, SABA makam!
Because the 24th is a mystical day for some of us, I've chosen a piece dedicated to one of history's greatest mystics, Mevlana Rumi.
I also felt compelled to add some of the verses of the Masnavi, which every neyzen knows by memory! I chose this English translation. However, you can find a nice rendition in Farsi, Turkish, and Italian in my piece Fuoco d'Amore: • Fuoco d'Amore .
The Farsi version is wonderfully spoken by Azin Zahedi, the Turkish one by Gülin Mansur.
Saba Mevlana Peşrev
Composer:
Hamza Ağa (Kemani, Mevlevî Hamza Efendi) (? — 1830?)
Makam: Saba
Usul: Nim Sofyan
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your warm support and for sticking with me throughout these three weeks. The Advent Calendar 2024 is complete, but I want to continue recording and publishing videos in 2025: something nice is in the works, and I'm excited to share it with you all soon!
Peace, love, health, and music to everybody. Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating it! Happy New Year, dear friends!
Listen to this Ney, while it's complaining,
The story of separation it's explaining.
Ever since they plucked me from my original ground,
Men and women cry upon my painful sound.
I need a breast pierced with the yearning of separation,
So that I may tell the meaning of my painful lamentation.
In every sort of company I cry, lament and moan,
Both the happy and the unhappy are charmed by my tone.
This breath in the Ney is fire and isn't a sheer blow,
He who hasn't this fire let him die and let him go.
It is the fire of love that has made the Ney demented,
And is love-desire that renders the wine fermented.
The Ney is a friend to those who lose their companions,
Our breasts are also pierced like the Ney's divisions.
Who has ever seen an antidote and poison like the Ney?
Who has ever seen a consoling friend like the Ney?
The Ney is telling stories of the perilous ways and coils,
The love stories of Majnun and his bloody toils.
From the “Masnavi” by Mawlana Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī (1207-1273)
Translated by Erkan Türkman. From "A Bouquet of Rumi's Versified Poems" (Konya, Turkey: Misket Ltd., 1996)
