Focus on staying relaxed when singing through these high notes. This is KEY! If anything feels too tense or too high, drop out and come back in when you feel ready.
As you go higher, the larynx rises and tilts; this is meant to happen; however, our bodies tend to want to work against us as we sing high and begin to feel stressed. It’s important to start retraining this in the body. Stay loose as you sing through these.
As silly as this may sound, think of the sound coming out from your forehead & cheeks. While the voice doesn’t technically resonate through the sinus cavity and face, when we imagine the sound coming from these places, it helps us to place our voices well.
A simple thing you can do to help this is to practice singing with a pleasant look on your face. Not a smile, just a simple pleased look. Think, the corners of your mouth slightly lifted. This position helps relax your tongue and lift your soft palate. While you don’t need to drop your jaw as tall as possible to make space in your mouth, opening up more may be very helpful for you.
You are going to have to modify the vowels as you sing higher. You can only take the pure sound of a vowel up so high in your voice, when it begins getting too challenging to maintain the pure shape and sound of the vowel, that's when it’s time to modify.
For instance, when singing the Ya on Steps. The “Ah” in Ya may need to be modified to more of a “Yay” when singing higher. Vowel modification, simply put, is a way to achieve the tone and sound you want in your voice while still maintaining a healthy voice. It makes high notes easier to sing. Play around with modifications and see what feels most comfortable for you.
Any time you sing high, pay attention to not tilt your head back and lift your chin. This will tense up your neck muscles. Aim to keep your chin level with the ground.
