Описание: The Place de l'Europe - Simone Veil (formerly Place de l'Europe) is a square in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.

The Place de l'Europe is located in the heart of Europe's quarter, where most streets are named after major cities on the European continent. It has the distinction of being entirely located on an overpass, above the railway tracks of the Saint-Lazare station.

This square owes its name to the fact that around it radiate streets bearing the names of European capitals and major cities.

In 2017, the Paris City Council plans to rename it, if the Paris Council decides to do so: "Place of Europe - Simone-Veil", in tribute to Simone Veil, who was the first person to preside over a European Parliament resulting from a universal suffrage vote in 1979.

In 1832, the railway company from Paris to Saint-Germain had a tunnel dug under the Place de l'Europe. The Pereire brothers wanted to install the pier (then the name given to the stations) in Place de la Madeleine, but in the face of protests, they had to establish it below the Place de l'Europe, along the street of London: this first pier in the West was created in 1837. It was transferred in 1842 on Rue Saint-Lazare and over the years became the current Saint-Lazare station.

The widening of the railway tracks in 1895 completely eliminated the place of Europe, which was recreated on the huge viaduct built in 1863 by the engineer Jullien.

This viaduct with its X-shaped sits inspired painters such as Claude Monet and Gustave Caillebotte. It was replaced by a more modern model in 1931.
