The countdown clock hit zero at noon on Wednesday, July 23, officially marking the start of production for the Pele prototype reactor core assembly at the BWXT Innovation Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The 1.5MW Pele microreactor will provide resilient and reliable electricity for up to three years without refueling. The prototype will be delivered to the Dept. of Defense Strategic Capabilities Office for testing at Idaho National Lab.
Partners on this project include Rolls-Royce LibertyWorks, which is developing the power conversion module and Northrop Grumman providing the reactor's control module.
