Fentanyl, Other Street Drugs Found Adulterated with Light Stabilizer

The exchange is part of the Washington State Community Drug Checking Network, which recently revealed adulterants within the illicit drug supply. Many who consume unregulated drugs do not know when their purchase may include substances mixed within their supply. In 2024, another chemical was identified lacing street drugs during testing.

A light stabilizer called BTMPS has been identified within illicit fentanyl across America including in the Pacific Northwest.

The effects of the substance is not understood as BTMPS has not been tested in humans, but studies describe negative consequences among laboratory experiments using rats.

Another drug called xylazine, a tranquilizer approved or use in veterinary medicine, has also been discovered within the illicit street drug supply. Xylazine, also known as 'Tranq,' is not FDA approved for use in humans and can cause severe necrotic skin ulcerations. The overdose-reversing drug naloxone, credited with saving countless lives from opioid overdose, is not known to be effective in cases of xylazine toxicity as the tranquilizer is not an opioid.
