I picked up this gun at the Crossroads gun show a few months back. For a firearm in this condition at an even $200, I would have been a fool to pass it up.
The serial no. on this particular gun reads 161xxx, making it a "4th model" and putting it somewhere - I believe - in the 1899-1903 range.
The gun shoots the .38 S&W cartridge, a shorter predecessor to the .38 special, and chambers 5 rounds. This is the larger of the two safety hammerless models, the other being the .32 caliber and about 20% smaller throughout the frame. It shoots double-action exclusively, lacking an external hammer, and ejects spent shells with an automatic star ejector. I think this model was also called the "New Departure" revolver.
The condition of this gun is honestly astounding for being well over a hundred years old. Slight wear along the edges of the frame indicate this gun probably was carried - likely concealed - but the bore and action seem to say that it was seldom, if ever, fired.
I like this thing.
