Описание: DISCOVER LOWTHER CASTLE'S HISTORIC JOURNEY FROM RICHES TO RUIN, RESTORATION & REGENERATION

Lowther Castle is a grade II listed country house near Penrith in Cumbria, England. It was the ancestral home of the Lowther family, who have been prominent in the area for centuries. Constructed between 1806 and 1814 for William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, the castle was designed by renowned architect Robert Smirke in the grand Gothic Revival style. Featuring battlements, towers, and an imposing façade, it reflected the opulence of its time. Smirke, a distinguished architect, was also responsible for notable buildings, including the British Museum in London.
For over 800 years, the Lowther family has been one of Cumbria’s most influential landowners. Before the castle’s construction, a succession of grand residences stood on the estate, dating back to the medieval period. Their wealth and power stemmed from extensive landholdings, coal mining, and political influence. In the late 17th century, John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale, replaced the estate’s original manor with Lowther Hall, a stately home. However, in the early 19th century, William Lowther demolished the hall to make way for the more extravagant Lowther Castle, reflecting his immense fortune and lavish lifestyle.
The castle’s design included a striking nine-bay central block with angle turrets, a porte-cochère on the entrance front, and a prominent central tower. It was flanked by low wings connecting to angle pavilions, all adorned with battlements. A service wing extended eastward, while the forecourt was enclosed by another battlemented wall featuring turrets and a gatehouse.
Throughout the 19th century, Lowther Castle was a hub of aristocratic grandeur, filled with luxurious furnishings, valuable artworks, and an extensive library. It hosted royalty and key political figures, including the future King Edward VII. The vast estate, spanning thousands of acres, featured meticulously landscaped gardens. However, maintaining such a grand residence proved financially unsustainable. By the late 19th century, mismanagement and extravagant spending strained the family’s resources.
Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale—nicknamed the "Yellow Earl" for his preference for the color—led a lavish lifestyle centered around entertaining, hunting, and horse racing. He also co-founded and became the first president of the Automobile Association (AA), which adopted his distinctive livery. However, financial troubles persisted, and by 1935, he could no longer afford to reside at the castle, forcing him to leave.
Between 1939 and 1940, the castle was requisitioned for military use during World War II, serving as a training site for tank operations. It was eventually returned to the family in 1954, but by then, its fate was sealed. Hugh passed away in 1944, and his brother, Lancelot Lowther, inherited the title as the 6th Earl of Lonsdale. War damage, death duties, and a chronic lack of investment left the family unable to maintain the property. Attempts to donate the castle to the National Trust and other organizations were unsuccessful in the economically strained post-war period. In 1947, to mitigate financial burdens, a large auction was held to sell off its contents.
Lancelot died in 1953, succeeded by his grandson James, the 7th Earl of Lonsdale. By 1957, to avoid crippling taxes, James was forced to remove the castle’s roof. Every chimney pot, door handle, and fireplace was sold, leaving Lowther Castle an empty shell with only its façade and outer walls standing.
For decades, the castle remained abandoned, regarded as a romantic ruin. However, in the early 21st century, efforts to restore parts of the estate began. In 2008, the Lowther Castle & Gardens Trust was established with the goal of restoring the gardens and opening the site to the public. Following an initial £9 million restoration, the castle and select gardens reopened in 2011, welcoming visitors for the first time since the 1930s.
In 2016, the Lowther family resumed management of the property in preparation for the 2017 season. That same year, Lowther Castle Limited was formed to oversee activities at the site. Additionally, the estate introduced The Lost Castle, the UK’s largest wooden playground, built using 11 miles of sustainably sourced timber.
A 2018 report praised the revitalization of the partially demolished castle and its once-neglected gardens, recognizing the remarkable efforts to restore Lowther Castle as one of Cumbria’s premier attractions. Although it remains a ruin, the site has become one of the county’s most cherished landmarks, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
