In How to Use the Body's Instincts to Heal Trauma, Pat Ogden, PhD, looks at how a client's body language can reveal a path to healing.
Pat is the founder of sensorimotor psychotherapy, and is one of the top experts in the treatment of trauma and PTSD.
In this short clinical story, Pat shares one approach she took with a client who struggled with hyperarousal.
As Pat was starting to explore with the client what her hyperarousal felt like in her body, she was also tracking her body's automatic behaviors. Pat was looking for ways that her body was trying to self-soothe.
That's when she noticed a particular movement that seemed rather commonplace at first. But it would lead to an enlightening discovery about a painful link to the client's past.
Pat's client suffered from attachment trauma, and she would often fall into this movement pattern without giving it much thought. It was calming to her, even though she wasn't initially aware of it.
Through their work together, Pat helped the client use this gesture in a more conscious way, to help calm her whenever she would get aroused.
The client could then implicitly trigger positive attachment memories that she could call upon when she needed.
By helping the client tune in to her body's own wisdom, Pat helped her to be more grounded during the important work in healing trauma.
