Using an NMRA Standards Guage.
The NMRA standards gauge is possibly the most important tool a model railroaded can have in their toolbox.
First if allows you to check that wheels sets and track are in guage, it also let's you check the width and gaps for guard rails on bridges and turnouts.
The two functions that you normally don't see it used for is to check clearance around the track and xoupler height.
although I prefer a Kadee coupler height guage for the latter.
