ADA and AACE guidelines recommend a stepwise approach to glycemic control that begins with metformin and intensifies incrementally to dual and triple therapy at three-month intervals until the patient reaches their individual goals. According to the AACE/ACE guideline, a broader variety of first-line medications can be used, and a hierarchy of use is recommended, as well as initial dual and triple therapy.
