The story shifts to Abby and Lev in Santa Barbara. Searching abandoned homes along the coast, they uncover a hidden passage leading to a basement. Inside, they find a working radio and begin scanning frequencies — until someone answers.

They’re alive, and they tell Abby to come to Catalina Island.

Hope finally sparks… but it doesn’t last. As Abby and Lev leave the house, they’re ambushed by a violent group and dragged away.

The chapter ends as Ellie arrives in Santa Barbara herself, stepping into the sunburned ruins, unknowingly walking straight toward Abby — and the end of their long, bloody path.
