The main and official language of Nepal is Nepali, which is spoken in the Terai and mid-mountain regions. Nepali belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European family. Several regional dialects are found in the Terai and hilly areas. A vast majority of the population in Nepal is Hindu, but a small percentage follow Buddhism or other religious beliefs. Forests account for about one-third of Nepal's total area, with most of this area state-owned despite logging and poor management, timber represents one of the country's most valuable resources and is a major source of potential income.
