Today we’re stepping back to appreciate one of nature’s quietest storytellers: the lichen. If you spot a healthy lichen community like this one, it’s usually a strong indicator that your local air quality is excellent. Lichens are incredibly sensitive to pollutants, especially nitrogen and sulphur compounds, absorbing them directly from the atmosphere.
Because they can’t regulate what enters their system, they serve as a natural barometer for environmental health. When air pollution rises, sensitive lichen species begin to disappear, while only the hardiest survive. That’s why seeing an abundance and variety of lichens, like this one basking in the spring sunshine, is a wonderful sign that your environment is thriving.
In garden design, we often celebrate the larger statements - bold planting schemes, beautiful hard landscaping - but it's also important to notice the smaller signs that point to a healthy, balanced garden. Encouraging clean air spaces, rich biodiversity, and mindful planting choices creates gardens that are not only beautiful but resilient.
So next time you see lichens clinging to a tree, a stone wall, or an old fence post, take a moment to breathe deeply and celebrate that connection with nature. They are silent witnesses to the health of our world, and today, I’m delighted to share a little moment of appreciation for them with you.
