How-To: Kids Hei Hei Costume DIY (No Sewing Required!)

Yellow felt (4 sheets 9 x 12 inches each)
Red felt (4 sheets 9 x 12 inches each)
Blue felt (5 sheets 9 x 12 inches each)
Green felt (2 sheets 9 x 12 inches each)
Black felt (1 sheet 9 x 12 inches)
Pipe cleaners (8)
Styrofoam ball 3” diameter (1)
Small round bowl (to trace neckhole)
Kitchen knife
Black marker
Double sided fabric tape
Pinback (1 inch)
Safety pins
Hot glue gun and sticks
Scissors

How to:

Collar piece:
Glue 4 sheets of yellow felt together
Trace circle in center and cut out
Draw and cut a zig zag shape
Glue 2 sheets of red felt together
Draw and cut zig zag shape
Glue to the back of the yellow piece
Glue 2 sheets of blue felt together
Draw and cut zig zag shape
Glue to the back of the red piece

Eye piece:
Cut styrofoam ball in half
Cut two black circles and glue to eyes
Lay out eyes, draw and cut a red oval base
Trace half the eye and draw a wide U shape
Cut and make another matching piece
Glue in place and glue eyes on top
Cut and glue two long teardrop snoods to the sides
Cut a triangle beak and glue
Draw nostrils with a black marker

Comb:
Cut a wavy comb and glue top edges together
Cut up scrap felt to use as stuffing
Cut a skinny rectangle and glue to the base


Tail:
Place 2 pieces of blue felt together and cut out two tail feathers
Repeat for green feathers
Cut out notches around each feather
Twist 2 pipe cleaners together and bend ends down
Hot glue to the middle of each feather and glue felt together
Bend feathers to curl
Hot glue feathers together and glue a pinback to the top back of tail

Assemble:
Use double sided fabric tape to attach eyes to the hood
Safety pin the comb to the top of the hood
Pin the tail to the back and fluff feathers
Use double sided fabric tape to secure the collar piece in place
