The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation hosted the virtual program honoring Juneteenth. Presented by historian and author Tommie D. Boudreaux and the Galveston Historical Foundation, the program highlighted the origins of Juneteenth, the nation’s oldest commemoration of the end of slavery. The presentation explored the events of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared that all enslaved people in Texas were free, marking a powerful moment in American history.
Tommie D. Boudreaux, a lifelong Galveston resident, retired educator, and author of Galveston’s Juneteenth Story... And Still We Rise, shared the rich history, legacy, and ongoing significance of this Freedom Day.
➡️ Juneteenth is a time to reflect, educate, and celebrate the strength and resilience of African American communities.
