The James Webb Space Telescope has provided an unprecedented glimpse into the volcanic activity on Jupiter's moon, Io. This video explores the recent discoveries made by Imke de Pater and their team, including the detection of an energetic eruption and the confirmation of a 2-decade-old hypothesis.
In November 2022, the telescope observed an eruption near the Kanehekili Fluctus lava flow field, revealing the emission of excited sulfur monoxide gas. Additionally, increased thermal emissions were detected at the Loki Patera lava lake, indicating the sinking of its solid crust into molten lava.
Nine months later, in August 2023, the researchers revisited Io, capturing new infrared thermal emissions. The lava flows from the 2022 eruption had expanded significantly, covering an area four times larger. At Loki Patera, a new cooled crust formed, consistent with its behavior over the past few decades.
The 2023 images also captured sulfur monoxide emissions and, for the first time, sulfur gas emissions at previously unseen wavelengths. These emissions were distributed across the northern hemisphere, suggesting they were produced by electrons from Io's plasma torus interacting with its sulfur dioxide atmosphere.
Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of Io's volcanic activity and atmospheric phenomena, and discover how the Webb Telescope is revolutionizing our understanding of this unique moon.
