'Launda' means a boy and 'naach' means dance, so Launda Ke Naach means the dance of a boy who dresses up as a female dancer and dances as such. Its practice has dwindled in Trinidad and Guyana, however, in Suriname and the Netherlands, it is indispensable at Hindu-Surinamese weddings. The dancer provides the ultimate mood sensation. It is a tradition that has been around for generations. In the episode below we follow around the most famous Nachaniya in the Netherlands.
Many may think that this is a cross dressing or the choice of a homosexual, however it is not. In fact the Nachaniya lives a normal male life when not performing.
This tradition comes from the Bhojpuriya tradition of the Indian indentured laborers. Apart from the wedding this dance performances was also seen in other festivities, such as the first cutting of the hair of a child.
