How does Iran accurately strike targets nearly 1770 km away in Israel without having its own navigation satellites?
The answer lies in a fascinating technology called Inertial Navigation System (INS). This system is used in many of Iran’s ballistic missiles and drones. Instead of relying on satellite signals like GPS, INS works using highly sensitive gyroscopes and accelerometers that continuously calculate the missile’s position, speed, and direction from the moment it is launched.
By using the launch location and initial velocity as a reference, the system can estimate the missile’s trajectory throughout its flight, even without external signals. However, this technology has a major limitation. Once launched, these missiles usually follow a pre-programmed flight path, which makes their path predictable.
Because of this predictable trajectory, advanced interceptor systems can often calculate the path of incoming missiles and destroy them mid-air before they reach their targets.
