Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, is one of America's most extravagant estates—165 rooms built over 28 years (1919-1947) by media baron William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan. He spent $8-10 million (roughly $120-150M today) creating a hilltop palace filled with European art and antiques. But Hearst never finished it. The Great Depression destroyed his empire—by 1937 he owed $126 million ($1.5B today). Creditors seized control. He sold newspapers, magazines, and most of his legendary art collection. Marion Davies, his companion of 34 years, saved him by loaning over $1M when he was broke. In 1947, seriously ill, Hearst left the castle for the last time, tears streaming down his face. He died in 1951 at Marion's Beverly Hills mansion. His legal family excluded Marion from the funeral. The Hearst Corporation donated the castle to California in 1958—it survives as a museum, the opposite of the private kingdom Hearst built.
