What is that weird liquid in yogurt that forms if it has been in the fridge awhile?
What is that weird liquid in sour cream that forms after opening?
Whey is that liquid. Whey is totally normal and edible.
Either stir the whey back into your yogurt or drain it out.
Avoid the liquid forming by leveling out the top of your yogurt or sour cream.
Whey is similar to buttermilk.
Yogurt is made from milk kind of the same way as butter or cheese
(ie the curds and whey separate). That means the milk solids and the milk liquid separate.
In yogurt it is the live cultures and temperature that cause the split.
In butter it is curning that causes the split.
In cheese it is an acid like lemon juice or rennet that causes the split.
