History: Originally inhabited by the Ndebele before 1600, the area later fell under the governance of Ndebele Khosi Musi in the 1600s. Tshwane, the administrative capital of South Africa, is home to landmarks like the Union Buildings, the headquarters of national departments, and over 130 embassies. Its origins date back to the 1840s with settler Lucas Bronkhorst in the Fountains Valley, and its formal establishment in 1885. Declared the capital of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek in 1860, Pretoria predates Johannesburg by over 30 years but grew slower due to the gold rush driving Johannesburg’s rapid expansion. With the amalgamation of 13 municipalities in 2000 to form the City of Tshwane, various economic centres were added to the spatial structure of the original administration, giving rise to a polycentric structure. The cross created by Paul Kruger Street intersecting with WF Nkomo St (the former Church Street) at Church Square defines the main spatial structure of the city. Over recent years the character of the city of Tshwane has changed drastically. Yet its fundamental identity remains rooted in politics and administration.
