Mastering the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AIS on the Nikon D800E comes with its own set of challenges. With this manual focus lens, I have to get closer to my subjects to fill the frame, which isn’t always easy. The D800E’s loud shutter can be a giveaway, especially in quiet environments, making shooting awkward. On busy streets, it's not as noticeable, but in more intimate settings, it can feel intrusive.
Another challenge? People tend to move out of the frame when they notice me composing through the viewfinder. To counter this, I am practising shooting from the hip, shoulder, or even a dangled hand. If I do use the viewfinder, I need to be on the move—so that people don’t have time to react.
I won’t crop my photos in post. This helps me to truly understand the 24mm focal length and get the best composition in-camera and framing correct, even when not using the viewfinder.
So this time I walk the pathways of Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur's popular shopping area, packed with malls and usually with people, a place I've only visited once to shoot, and see what It holds for me.
