The international Auction House, Sotheby's held its first preview
exhibition in Beijing on Friday (6/10) marking its official return
to China's capital since 1988. Sotheby's has tapped into the
latest boom area for collectables; the Chinese market, which is
rich with antique treasures and well-to-do aficionados. The
exhibition's highlight is a US $ 6.5 million collection of 32
pieces of the finest Imperial Chinese porcelain, to be auctioned
in Hong Kong at the end of October. The Sulin An collection, an
anonymous Asian collection, is one of the most important private
collections of Imperial Chinese ceramics to appear at auction
since the British rail fund collection in 1989. Julian Thompson,
chairman of Sotheby's of Asia, described the collection as a
"revelation". The most important pieces date from the Song
(960-1279), Yuan (1279-1368) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. They
include a large Yuan dynasty blue and white meiping
(broad-shouldered vase) which alone is expected to fetch over one
million dollars.
