James “Whitey” Bulger was one of the most feared crime bosses in American history — and one of the most controversial FBI informants ever exposed. As leader of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang, Bulger controlled organized crime in South Boston throughout the 1970s and 1980s, overseeing racketeering, extortion, loansharking, drug trafficking, and multiple murders.
During this same period, Bulger secretly worked as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, providing information on his rivals in the Patriarca crime family. His relationship with FBI agent John Connolly later became one of the biggest corruption scandals in FBI history, with allegations that Bulger was protected while continuing violent criminal activity.
In 1994, Bulger was indicted on federal racketeering charges and fled Boston, becoming one of America’s most wanted fugitives. He remained on the run for 16 years before being captured in Santa Monica, California in 2011. In 2013, he was convicted of racketeering and involvement in 11 murders and sentenced to life in federal prison.
In 2018, Bulger was transferred to USP Hazelton in West Virginia, where he was killed by fellow inmates shortly after arriving.
This documentary breaks down the true story of Whitey Bulger — Boston organized crime, Winter Hill Gang power, FBI corruption, racketeering, RICO charges, informant scandal, fugitive manhunt, federal trial, and prison murder. This is the real history behind one of the most infamous mob bosses in U.S. crime history.
