Tom Prasada-Rao wrote and recorded "$20 Bill" the night after George Floyd's murder in 2020 while he himself was declining from his own battle with cancer. The tenderness of his performance in that moment and the timelessness of his words touched many hearts around the country, and the song was recorded by dozens, maybe hundreds, of musicians in the months that followed.
I've been thinking about it a lot lately in the wake of the murders of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, and also in the midst of Black History Month.
There are songs to be sung on marches and there are songs to be sung in quiet reflection. "$20 Bill" is one of the very best examples I've ever heard of the latter.
