Poem : Bhai Vir Singh Jee - Bharat Bhoomi Da Virlaap
Bhai Vir Singh, a towering figure in Punjabi literature and a scholar of Sikhism, composed numerous poetic works that reflect deep spiritual insight. Among his works is the celebrated "Chaar Sahibzaade" poem, a moving tribute to the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. This poem beautifully captures the heroic sacrifices and unwavering faith of the Sahibzaade, who laid down their lives for the principles of righteousness, justice, and freedom.
The poem can be found in Bhai Vir Singh's magnum opus "Guru Nanak Chamatkar", though its specific verses might vary in presentation depending on the edition.
Here is a brief excerpt or summary inspired by Bhai Vir Singh's style:
The Eldest Sons: Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji
Battle of Chamkaur Sahib (1705 CE): Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his followers were besieged by Mughal and allied forces at Chamkaur Sahib. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Sikhs fought with unmatched courage and faith.
Baba Ajit Singh Ji (18 years old): Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s eldest son led a small group of Sikhs into battle, displaying exceptional valor. Fully aware of the slim chance of survival, Baba Ajit Singh Ji embraced martyrdom in the service of righteousness and dharma.
Baba Jujhar Singh Ji (14 years old): Inspired by his elder brother's courage, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji sought his father’s blessing to join the battle. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in his divine wisdom, sent him forth as a warrior of faith. Baba Jujhar Singh Ji also achieved martyrdom in the battlefield, fighting fearlessly.
The Younger Sons: Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji
Arrest and Betrayal: After the family was separated during the siege of Anandpur Sahib, Mata Gujri Ji (Guru Gobind Singh Ji's mother) and the younger Sahibzaade (Baba Zorawar Singh Ji, 9 years old, and Baba Fateh Singh Ji, 6 years old) were betrayed by Gangu, a former servant, and handed over to the Mughal authorities in Sirhind.
Imprisonment and Trial: In Sirhind, the children and Mata Gujri Ji were imprisoned in a cold tower (Thanda Burj). The Mughal governor, Wazir Khan, attempted to bribe and coerce the Sahibzaade to convert to Islam, promising them luxury and safety. The children, with unwavering faith, refused, choosing death over compromise with their principles.
Martyrdom: On December 26, 1705, Wazir Khan ordered that the Sahibzaade be bricked alive into a wall. When the wall collapsed before suffocating them, they were mercilessly executed. Mata Gujri Ji, upon hearing of their martyrdom, attained spiritual union with the Divine.
Spiritual Legacy
Supreme Faith: The Chaar Sahibzaade demonstrated unparalleled faith in the teachings of their father, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and the principles of Sikhism.
Fearlessness: Their sacrifices symbolize the Sikh ethos of standing firm against tyranny and oppression, no matter the cost.
Inspiration for Sikhs: The martyrdom of the Sahibzaade continues to inspire Sikhs to live with courage, righteousness, and devotion to the Guru’s path.
