In 2006 the al Shabaab Ismalist militant gained control of most of Kismayo in the Lower Juba region of Somalia and turned it into their economic hub; putting a tax on almost everything and exporting charcoal as a way of funding their militant operations.
On the 02 October 2012, a reconstituted Somali National Army and Forces of the Ras Konboni Brigade with help from Kenyan contingent of the AMISOM troops captured the city from the al Shabaab insurgent.
