THE SONGBIRD: Polish soprano Anna Smiech studied at the Moniuszko Academy under Halina Mickiewicz. She made her debut in Warsaw in "The Magic Flute" and appeared in Venice in "Capriccio" and "Thais." Other roles across Europe have included the Queen of the Night, Rosina, Gilda, Olympia, Amina, and Alcina.
THE MUSIC: Published as an "ariette" in 1887, Delibes "Le rossignol" is a typical soprano bird song with the singer listening to the song of a nightingale and singing along to its graceful, slightly melancholy melody, much decorated with avian vocal effects. Here a flute has been added to the arrangement.
