Saint Jorge Castle is a historic fortress with a long history of battles and wars. Built over ancient foundations dating back to around 2nd century BC, it was first strengthened by the Moors in the 11th century as a strong military base. In 1147, King Afonso I of Portugal and his soldiers, along with crusaders, captured the castle from the Moors during the Second Crusade. This event was crucial in Portugal's history as it marked a turning point in reclaiming the region from Moorish rule. Over the years, the castle continued to be a key stronghold during conflicts with neighboring Castile and played a significant role in the Portuguese Restoration War in 640-1668.
