Описание: Jar of Flies was a remarkable album when it came out. After listening to it for this guitar solo it still remains as daring and impactful 30 years later. Dirt, the bands masterpiece came out two years earlier and instead of releasing a competitive follow the band decided to release a completely different record. Jar of Flies was different in many ways: it was mostly acoustic driven with a majority of ballads instead of dirt’s heavy Nu Metal Grunge sound, and it was an EP instead of a full length album. I thought this was a really smart move, this way Alice in Chains fans didn’t need to pit these two records against each other, they could enjoy them both in different ways. The band also replaced Bassist Mike Star with Mike Inez.

The guitar solo for Nutshell is beautiful. It really sums of the sorrowful feeling of the song. It also has a very spontaneous improvised feel to it within a very strict structure which makes it even more compelling.

Alice in Chains really epitomized the the reality of the 90’s. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was definitely the spokesperson and the symbol for the movement’s live fast and die young mentality, but Alice and Chains is arguably the core band that actually lived it to its conclusion. Layne staley and Mike Star both perished from severe drug addictions over many years, and the band’s lyrics and imagery foreshadowed this in a very spooky way. Layne and Mike’s deaths were not quick and flashy like Kurts, they were painful and drawn out, which tells a more realistic story of how tragic and unheroic drug addiction really is. Alice in Chains is not only one of the greatest musical bands of all time, they are also one of the most important cautionary tales of living live on the edge.
