SUPERSEDED - Here are nice new ones (July 2021): • Duck's triangle ceiling unsupported struct... and • EF + HR's square ceiling unsupported struc... and • floating structure supertwins | Ark: Survi... .
This is Part 2, PART 1 HERE: how to build floating structures 1 | Ark: Survival Evolved 112 • how to build floating structures 1 | Ark: ...
1 building up to five across
2 some home improvements
3 building bigger than five across
4 CF's fence foundation anchor
With this last the FF does place a bit high so if you want to be clever you can raise the ceiling a little (raising/lowering by ¼ and ¾ | building fundamentals | Ark: Survival Evolved 95 • raising/lowering by ¼ and ¾ | Ark: Surviva... ) so the FF 'staple' is hidden inside it and now that is sweet. A row of pillars one per tile is the simplest way to build anything up to five across, with each pillar supporting the two ceilings either side. It's much easier and more reliable to build pillars down from the ceilings than up from the terrain meaning you will generally just take the default spacing which is gaps of two. However you support the structure is fine providing you leave that single connection at one end within full support range of the anchor. So with my flight deck I could have just linked up the existing pillars with ceilings and that would have worked but I wanted to be consistent. If I demolish any connected part of my base, anywhere, even the walls, the flight deck will fall down and in fact has a few times now. For the generator housing I built my subfloor from the pillar below it. There seems to be no limitation as to what you build on this type of structure. I was able to put floating FFs for stacking things on this structure but they needed support as in example 3. I was able to demolish and replace anything on the finished deck - boxes, smithy, bed, forge, crop plot etc except lights, don't demolish those as they count as connected building components. The sensible thing to do is remove the pillars only when you are 100% happy but if you change your mind you just put the pillars back temporarily, it's not a big deal.
