"Outlander" is a historical fiction novel series by Diana Gabaldon, which has been adapted into a popular television series. The series is set in the 18th century Scotland, and follows the story of Claire Randall, a married British nurse who finds herself transported back in time from the 20th century to 1743.
The 18th century Scotland was a time of political upheaval and social change.
In 1745, the Jacobite rising, a failed attempt to restore the House of Stuart to the throne, took place. This event is central to the story of "Outlander," and provides the backdrop for much of the action and political intrigue in the series. The rising saw Bonnie Prince Charlie, the son of James Francis Edward Stuart, lead an army of Scottish Highlanders and Irish troops in a bid to reclaim the throne of Great Britain.
