I had the honor to study under the master of masters Richard Boukas (Mannes College of Music, 1992-1993.)

Mr. Boukas’ pedagogical method was alike amusing and yet deadly serious. He was one of the most knowledgeable minds I have ever met.

He was indeed an erudite of the first order: he tended to imbue his lectures with the arts and philosophy!

Indeed, Richard did much to elevating jazz to a transcendental art form, expressive and highly sophisticated, on equal terms with classical music!

“…Classical composers were, first and foremost, improvisers.”

The devil is in the details!

Like the Ancient Greek philosophers, Mr. Boukas had a penchant to dissecting complex Jazz compositions into their basic structures and minutiae.

At that time, I was straddling betwixt Classical Music and Jazz Music, and it was difficult to stay put in just one genre.

Of course, Mr. Boukas’ priceless music lessons will eventually produce fruits in my music career.

I just posted a video playing Brazilian music, “Taza D’ Cafe” featuring a young guitarist, Angel Ortiz.

El método pedagógico del Sr. Boukas era a la misma manera divertido y, sin embargo, mortalmente serio. Era una de las mentes más conocedoras que he conocido.

De hecho, era un erudito de primer orden: ¡tendía a imbuir sus conferencias con las artes y la filosofía!
