July 23rd, 1994. Reigning WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion Jeff “Hit Man” Harding made the 3rd defense of his title against “The Bodysnatcher” Mike McCCallum in his 1st fight since a 19 month long layoff.
Prefight records; McCallum 46(35)-2-1, Harding 23(17)-1.
Entering the bout, the 28 year old champion had defeated top oppositions such as Nestor Hipolito Giovannini, Christophe Tiozzo & Dennis Andries (2x) while the 37 year old challenger who was also a 4-1 betting favorite had notable wins over David Braxton, Donald Curry, Luigi Minchillo, Milton McCrory, Michael Watson, Herol Graham, Said Skouma, Steve Collins & Sumbu Kalambay.
It was an action-packed albeit one sided affair for McCallum who won almost every round where he displayed top notch ring generalship and pinpoint accuracy coupled with an evasive defense against the tough Harding who stayed determined all the way to the final bell.
In rounds 2 and 7, Mike’s gumshield was knocked out of his mouth as he was hit while breathing with his mouth open and he was deducted a point in round 4 after repeated warnings for low blows by referee Marty Denkin.
After 36 minutes of skilled action, The Bodysnatcher was awarded a UD12 with scores of 116-113, 115-114 & 115-113.
Although the Hit Man was outgunned for the most part, he was not exactly dominated as he had his moments with a number of big shots and pushed the seasoned 13 year veteran to the core with his relentless pressure despite the fact that he was unable to put enough rounds in the bank to retain his title.
This would be the last pro fight for the Sydney born warrior who was a former 2x WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion as he hung up his gloves with a final record of 23(17)-2 following the loss.
As for Mike McCallum, he became the first boxer of Jamaican descent to have won world titles in 3 different weight divisions; at Light Middleweight, Middleweight & Light Heavyweight and also the 18th fighter in history of the sport to become Triple Crown World Champion.
