Madeleine Peyroux (Athens, Georgia, April 18, 1974) is an American jazz singer. Peyroux (pronounced "pey-roo") is known for her voice, which has been compared to that of Billie Holiday. Peyroux was born in Georgia, United States. Her family moved to Brooklyn, New York, when Peyroux was six years old so that her father could pursue a career as an actor. She grew up in New York City and Southern California. When she was thirteen, her parents divorced and she moved with her mother to Paris, where she lived until she was twenty-two. Peyroux began singing at the age of fifteen, busking in the Latin Quarter of Paris. She joined a group called the Riverboat Shufflers, first as a hat-passer, then as a singer. At sixteen, she joined The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band. For two years they toured Europe, performing songs by Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and others, which laid the foundation for the material for her first album, Dreamland. The CD, which breathes the atmosphere of the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century, contains performances of Fats Waller's I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, Billie Holiday's Gettin' Some Fun Out of Life and songs previously performed by Bessie Smith, such as Reckless Blues and Lovesick Blues. Peyroux also recorded three of her own songs on Dreamland: Always a Use (on which she accompanies herself on guitar), Hey Sweet Man and Dreamland. Dreamland was released in 1996 and immediately attracted a lot of attention. Following her debut album, Peyroux was asked to sing in the opening programmes of Sarah McLachlan and Cesária Évora, and she performed at jazz festivals. Peyroux spent the following six years as a street musician in Paris. She performed abroad on rare occasions, but generally kept a low profile. Peyroux's second CD, Careless Love, was released eight years later, in September 2004, and was generally well received. The album sold over a million copies worldwide. The CD includes covers of songs by Leonard Cohen (Dance Me to the End of Love), Bob Dylan (You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go), Elliott Smith (Between the Bars), Hank Williams (Weary Blues), and others. It also includes a song Peyroux wrote herself, together with Jesse Harris and producer Larry Klein, entitled Don't Wait Too Long. Her third solo album, Half the Perfect World, was released on 12 September 2006. =
