Goodbye Hadi: Thousands at Funeral Promised to Keep July Uprising Alive
Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life attended the funeral prayers (Namaz-e-Janaza) of Sharif Osman Hadi, one of the frontline leaders of Bangladesh’s July Uprising. The massive gathering was held in front of the National Parliament Building in the capital Dhaka, where mourners poured in like a human tide.
Participants sworn to uphold the spirit of the July Uprising 2024, which led to the downfall of nearly 16 years of authoritarian rule of Sheikh Hasina. Observers believe that more than one million people joined the final prayers for Hadi, who had emerged as an iconic symbol of resistance against authoritarianism and fascism.
Following the funeral, Hadi was laid to rest on the campus of University of Dhaka, beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, near the university’s central mosque.
Although Hadi is no longer alive, many believe his lifelong struggle will continue to inspire generations to remain honest, courageous, and patriotic.
